The Amplification Project is a team-based initiative to study the history, musical importance, and cultural and political impact of amplification technologies. Our research revolves around the material artifacts of amplifiers and other amplifying devices, but these technologies are only a starting point. While an amplifier is a thing, amplification is a process, or rather a collection of processes. Some of these processes have squarely to do with sound production. Others have more to do with making sound into something that has social or political currency. Our project is designed to examine the ways in which amplified sound has served as a medium and a set of practices that have affected and transformed ways of conceptualizing silence and noise, public and private, personal and political, and nature and technology, among other crucial categories of experience.In this presentation, I take a two-pronged approach. First, I outline the interdisciplinary methodologies that gave rise to the conceptualization of the Amplification Project and inform our ongoing research. Second, I discuss the collaborative research practice that we have aimed to cultivate within my research team. I will seek to tie these different strands of the project together, to demonstrate that our way of practicing interdisciplinarity is fostered and strengthened by the collaborative framework that we employ. Ampology, as we pursue it, is a synthesis of the methods and fields that we bring to bear upon our shared research objectives.
