Building women entrepreneurs' resilience during uncertainties in Sri Lanka

Activity: Talk or presentation typesOral presentation

Description

Within a highly uncertain global context, assuring women’s entrepreneurial resilience is vital due to their valuable contribution to the economy and society. Similar to regional countries, Sri Lankan women entrepreneurs have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Empirical evidence is available to understand their status and challenges; however, mostly from Western contexts. Their findings cannot be replicated in South Asia due to its unique socio-economic and cultural contexts. Hence, research should aim to understand the South Asian women entrepreneurs’ context, where strong connections between socio-cultural dynamics and economic challenges exist. Particularly, research should be targeted to explore the determinants of entrepreneurial resilience among women entrepreneurs in this region, which is relatively under-researched compared to that in Western countries. The status of women entrepreneurship in Asia is highly diversified.

Sri Lanka is another classic example with its multi-cultural and social diversity. In addition, there is a significant difference between the two genders’ contributions to the economic activities. Promoting and supporting women entrepreneurs’ resilience will deliver benefits both individual and society. Early studies considered entrepreneurial resilience to be gender neutral. Later, opinion has been gradually changed, highlighting the necessity of further studies to explore entrepreneurial resilience using different lenses.
