Description

The Covid-19 pandemic brought changes, limiting direct human interaction to protect public health and accelerating the development and adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) backed technologies. These technologies included digital humans. A 'digital human' is an AI-powered human-like entity capable of communicating and forming a human emotional connection. We seek to examine current research into the use of digital humans and its implications as a source of emotional support, connection and guidance. We raise questions about these issues and what they mean for organisations. Our analysis from a structured review of the literature suggests that the use of digital humans as a source of emotional support, connection and guidance depends on the extent to which digital humans meet human expectations in two areas; first, human-like design, the extent to which digital humans are anthropomorphically similar to humans; second, human-like behaviour, the extent to which digital humans demonstrate complex behaviours such as trust, empathy and relational behaviour. Both raise concerns about the capacity for emotional connections and trust.
