Chillout: Ambient Music & Ecstatic Trance

Description

Ambient and chillout music have deep roots in mindfulness, breathwork, meditation, and spirituality. This talk will explore the earliest roots of this music, tracing it from prehistoric caves to ritual music cultures, from 1970s experimental music to contemporary electronica, discussing how we use music for healing and to access alternative states of consciousness, examining ecstatic states, trance, entrainment and the transformation of time. It will cover relationships between ambient music, early synthesizers and the avant-garde, link early techno/trance pioneers and classical composers, and discuss the birth of the chillout scene in Ibiza, Goa, and London.
