Elites Against Social Movements

Activity: Participating in or organising an event typesOrganising a conference, workshop, ...

Description

Do social movements transform power or are they ultimately absorbed by it?
This talk revisits the Polish Solidarity movement and the democratic transformations of 1989 to explore tensions between grassroots mobilisation and elite influence. Drawing on Michels, Gramsci, and Bourdieu, it questions whether movements empower democracy or unintentionally reproduce new forms of elite domination.
