Description
The sudden and unexpected emergence of accessible, generative AI (GenAI) was a disruptive force for higher education. Challenging how universities teach, learn and assess, with the initial temptation to prohibit, the task moving forward is to develop students as critical, ethical and responsible users of AI. This workshop will focus on how learning developers can work in partnership with academics and students to embed AI literacy within the curriculum. It will showcase our collaborative research on student perceptions of GenAI (O’Dea et al., 2025) and introduce a visual map for AI literacy, engaging colleagues in activities and discussion about generative AI and strategies for embedding this within teaching and learning delivery.Focusing on three strands, the workshop will explore ideas and strategies for ‘Engaging’ and opening positive and transparent conversations with students about GenAI, ‘Equipping’ students with technical and critical thinking skills to make best use in process and careful judgements of output, and Empowering students to understand the limitations and benefits for appropriate, considered and ethical use of AI within their own immediate study contexts and beyond. Participants will be given a copy of the visual map as a takeaway resource to apply to their own learning contexts. The workshop will showcase practical examples, ideas and resources addressing these three strands that colleagues can embed into teaching practice to develop student skills.
