Description

In 2025, the Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra will collaborate with Naga Mas, Glasgow’s community gamelan ensemble, and Perempuan Komponis (PK), an Indonesian collective of women composers, to create a large-scale intercultural improvisation. This project will unite traditional Javanese gamelan instruments, PK’s innovative compositional and performance practices, and GIO’s experimental improvisation methods. Through joint rehearsals, workshops, and public performances, the collaboration will explore improvisation as a cultural meeting point, bridging musical traditions across continents, fostering dialogue between community-based, experimental, and transnational ensembles, and encouraging new ways of listening. The work will foreground feminist, diasporic, and community-driven approaches to collaborative music-making, positioning the gamelan not as an exoticised sound object but as a living, adaptive practice capable of reciprocal exchange with experimental improvisation traditions.
