Description
Advanced practice roles for nurses have been evolving globally for over 50 years in response to patient need, lack of adequate healthcare provision and a shortfall of medical doctors in some areas. They have a significant impact on global health care addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and Universal Health Coverage. There is a large body of literature calling for clarity of Advanced Practice roles. The International Council of Nurses (ICN) and the ICN Nurse Practitioner/Advanced Practice Nurse Network have developed definitions and guidance for developing advanced practice roles, which has recently been updated. This work is essential, especially for countries where the role is new or not implemented. This presentation provides an overview of advanced practice nursing including the barriers and challenges to developing these roles. It will present the updated ICN definitions. It will finish with a case study illustrating the success of developing advanced practice nurse roles in Chile through collaborative working.Period | 30 Jun 2019 |
