Holding Space: Doing Emotionally Challenging Research — An Occupational Therapy Perspective on Researcher Wellbeing

Activity: Talk or presentation typesOral presentation

Description

Researching menstruation and gynaecological conditions is emotionally demanding work. Researchers in this field frequently navigate personal resonance with their subject matter, vicarious distress, and the sustained effort of advocating for research that remains underfunded and stigmatised. Yet researcher wellbeing is rarely addressed explicitly.
This interactive workshop is facilitated by an HCPC registered occupational therapist and doctoral researcher working at the intersection of women's health and qualitative research. Drawing on frameworks for life balance, meaningful activity, and reflexivity, the session uses reflexivity explicitly as both an ethical research practice and a tool for personal wellbeing, offering accessible and practical strategies for recognising and responding to the emotional demands of this work.
Participants will map the emotional demands of their research, explore what restores versus depletes them, and use a creative visual mapping tool to reflect on their research journey. No specialist knowledge required. Participants leave with a personalised wellbeing strategy and a tangible take-away to support ongoing emotional resilience.
