Description
Objective: To evaluate the impact of device screen size and ambient lighting on performance outcomes on an Online circular contrast perimetry (OCCP)-Eyeonic Vision test amongst sampled patients in Trinidad and Tobago. Methods: A cross‑sectional observational study was conducted among 70 adults attending eye clinics at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex and The University of the West Indies (UWI) Optometry Clinic. Eligible participants were ≥18 years and had normal visual fields or stable glaucoma. Each participant completed the OCCP test under four testing conditions combining two device types (17‑inch laptop, 10.9‑inch tablet) and two ambient lighting conditions - luminance (dark: 0 lux; light: 145 lux). The testing order was randomized, and both eyes were assessed under all conditions. A standardized font and consistent viewing distance were maintained throughout testing. Performance was assessed using visual field indices, including Visual Field Index (VFI), Mean Deviation (MD), and Pattern Standard Deviation (PSD).
Results: Participants included 31 males and 39 females, with a mean age of 38.2 years; 21.4% had glaucoma. VFI values were consistently high across all conditions (94.8%–96.9%), with no significant effects of device screen size or ambient lighting for either eye (all p > 0.05). MD values showed similarly stable performance across conditions (−1.84 to −1.18 dB), with no significant difference in screen size and luminance (all p > 0.05). PSD values were low overall, with no significant differences across conditions (all p > 0.05). Reliability test (interclass correlation coefficient (ICC)) was strong for VFI and MD (ICC 0.72–0.95), while PSD showed poor to good ICC, ranging from 0.22 to 0.88.
Conclusion: Screen size and ambient lighting had no significant impact on OCCP performance. VFI and MD demonstrated good reliability across testing conditions, although PSD showed variable reliability. These findings suggest that OCCP performance is largely unaffected by screen size and ambient lighting under the conditions tested.
