This presentation will explore the design and delivery of an assessment task for year one social work students, involving a live role-play activity supported by people with lived experience of health and social care. Social work students must complete 200 days of learning in practice settings. Before they can undertake any practice placements, Social Work England require they undergo assessed preparation for direct practice, to ensure they are safe to carry out practical learning in a service delivery setting. At the University of Huddersfield, this summative assessment includes first year students undertaking an interview with a member of our Public Partnership Group (PPG); a group of patients, service users, carers and other members of the public who contribute to teaching, learning and research across the school. This role-play activity provides an important opportunity for students to show they can appropriately structure and conduct a conversation with a service user. The assessment brief necessitates students actively demonstrate respectfulness, genuineness, empathy and professionalism. PPG members contribute to the assessment by offering detailed feedback to the students concerning these qualities, to inform a reflective written analysis of their practice. This presentation. will explore the perspectives of people with lived experience in relation to taking part in the role-play activity and giving meaningful feedback to students that can support their professional development. We will consider the challenges we have faced in conducting this live assessment task and the actions that we have taken to overcome them, and we will consider the impact on student learning.| Period | 7 Jul 2026 |
