Interaction, Agency and The Role of Talk in Music Technology Education

Dobson, E. (Speaker)

Activity: Talk or presentation typesInvited talk

Invited talk for Anna Xambo Sedo's Women Nordic Music Technology (WoNoMute) at The University of Oslo.

This talk presents an introduction to the gendered situation of music technology, provides an outline to a pedagogical model for fostering collaborative creativity, and how this inspired the creation of the Yorkshire Sound Women Network and related practice principles. In particular, this paper focuses on new multimodal research, which based on the social semiotic approach developed by Gunther Kress, investigates the relationship between social interaction and music technology engagement within a series extra-curricular workshops for girls. This work highlights some of the more subtle cues that signal confidence, agency and engagement, offering the potential to develop a more inclusive music technology pedagogy.
