Listen to us: Young children's experiences of family life

Activity: Talk or presentation typesOral presentation

Description

This workshop provided hands-on opportunities to explore methods for listening to young children and documenting their views in early childhood settings. It was informed by my British Academy/Leverhulme Trust Small Research Grant entitled LIME 'Listening through play-based methods: young children's experiences of family life in the aftermath of a global pandemic.' The project utilises play with sensory tuff trays and open-ended loose-parts resources to prompt children to discuss their understanding of family and what families do together.
In this workshop, participants were able to explore and engage with the tuff trays and activities used in the project, see and experience the children's 'I-poems' as a way to document children's input and appreciate art produced by the children. The workshop illustrated an effective way for early childhood practitioners to incorporate more active listening using approaches, objects and activities that are readily available in early childhood settings, thus rendering the practice cost-effective at a time of financial strain.
