Description

‘Metaverse’ represents shared virtual spaces that emerge from merging virtual and physical realities. Although the metaverse concept is still in its infancy, recent research suggests that its application could improve transportation operations and education. As such, this study explores through related articles how metaverse can enhance operations in the transport industry. Data were collected from the Scopus database using related keywords to metaverse in transport and a search string to locate ABS and ABCD-ranked journal articles between 2014 and 2023. A final dataset of 1056 articles were analysed using topic modelling (Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA)) to identify latent topics within the articles and thematic analysis to make sense of the topics. Our analyses suggest that the ‘metaverse’, as a technology, potentially enhances the resilience and sustainability of transport systems, changes transport-related behaviour, enhances quality of life and well-being, enables intelligent transport systems and supports transport-related learning and experiences. We propose an agenda to encourage further research.
