Personalising training with generative artificial intelligence (GAI)

Activity: Talk or presentation typesOral presentation

Description

Personalising training with generative artificial intelligence (GAI) has become an interesting topic since the public release of ChatGPT. While the intended meaning is generally implied or assumed, it is necessary to ask how GAI technology personalises training. If 'personalising training' is an improved form of employee training, this review intends to answer how. We used a two-level keyword structure to create a Scopus search string to search abstracts of documents available in the database. We used the inclusion criteria of English-language journal articles with an ABS rating and published after 2023, and manual abstract screening to create the final list of 18 articles to review. We thematically analysed the final list of articles. Our analysis suggests that GAI use in training offers personalisation through more options for trainees. We deduce that these options are meant to augment abilities, improve experiences and increase access. While this serves as an improved form of training, it depends on the use of natural language and how GAI tools tokenise it. Also, GAI-powered training, due to its use of natural language, can provide such flexibility that it can reflect trainees' preferences, likely weakening trainees' strengths and exacerbating issues such as 'metacognitive laziness'.
