Stakeholder Workshop: Customised Scorecard for Local Governments to Evaluate City Resilience in Reducing the Urban Heat Island (UHI) Effect (UHI City Resilience)

Description

Cities with dense populations and critical infrastructures face increasing risks from extreme heat events. These areas often trap heat and become significantly warmer than their surroundings, a phenomenon known as the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect. This contributes to dangerous temperature levels and increased mortality rates.

Local governments play a central role in implementing heat resilient strategies due to their closeness to communities. However, research indicates that many local authorities do not sufficiently prioritise managing the UHI effect. ‘UHI City Resilience’ aims to develop a customised scorecard for Sri Lankan local governments to evaluate how effectively their cities reduce the impacts of the UHI effect.

The project culminates in a stakeholder dissemination workshop, bringing together city leaders, policymakers, private and community organisations, academics, and other relevant groups.
