The Economic Superpowers of the World: A Conceptual Understanding of China, India and the United Kingdom

Activity: Talk or presentation typesInvited talk

Description

In recent years, scholars, politicians and economists have documented the ever increasing status of China and India as economic super powers. For a long period of time, both countries have been forward thinking in improving their own economies, increasing their fiscal stimulus and escalating their impact upon the global economy. Governments and institutions across the world, including the United Kingdom, European Union and Africa, are progressing their economic relationships with both countries. In particular, the European Referendum result in 2018 has forced the United Kingdom to establish stronger trade links across the globe. China and India as developing countries are leading the way in opening up the globalized world.

One significant way in which China and India are engaging in globalized innovation is through the spectrum of social enterprise. Social enterprise has become a key factor in the globalised economy for some time. The social enterprise agenda has garnered immense interest since the Global Financial Crisis of 2008. The essence of social enterprise is to have an impact on the country’s economy for a common purpose. More importantly, social enterprises are organisations that play an important role in their local communities and can play a crucial role at governmental level.

The aim of this paper is to provide a conceptual understanding of social enterprise and the ways in which it relates to the countries of China, India and the UK. This paper will present initial findings from a social enterprise UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) funded project. In this work, the author will argue for a more joined up approach to social enterprise within the context of global governance.
