Endometriosis is a chronic, often debilitating condition affecting approximately 10% of individuals assigned female at birth globally, yet it remains significantly underrepresented in occupational science literature. This study explores the lived experiences of individuals with endometriosis, examining how its symptoms impact occupational participation and engagement. Using a phenomenological approach, it investigates the personal meaning of occupation, the extent of disruption caused by endometriosis, and how individuals make sense of these challenges in their daily lives.
Methods
This research employs interpretative phenomenological analysis and feminist methodology to deeply explore the lived experience of endometriosis. Data was collected through a series of three in-depth interviews, using the Kawa Model as a framework to understand the impact of endometriosis upon occupation within participants lived reality. This qualitative approach allows for a nuanced understanding of the ways individuals interpret and navigate endometriosis and their occupations within societal and structural contexts.
Impact / Results
Preliminary findings indicate that endometriosis affects all areas of occupation, presenting a significant occupational injustice. Participants report disruptions due to chronic pain, fatigue, and fluctuating symptoms, which lead to occupational imbalance and reduced participation in meaningful occupations. These challenges are further exacerbated by systemic barriers, including stigma, social isolation, and gendered role expectations.
Conclusion / Contribution to the occupational therapy profession
Occupational therapy has a critical role in addressing the occupational injustices faced by individuals with endometriosis. This research highlights the need for increased awareness, advocacy, and intervention strategies that support individuals living with endometriosis in managing their symptoms and maintaining occupational engagement.
