Tracking the Social Process: Visualizing Community Networks of Global Contemporary Experimental Improvised Practices

Activity: Talk or presentation typesOral presentation

Description

This presentation explores Maria Sappho’s doctoral research into the social and collaborative structures underpinning contemporary experimental improvised music across global contexts. Drawing on fieldwork, interviews, and archival engagement, the study investigates how communities of improvisers form, sustain, and transform themselves in response to cultural, geographic, and political conditions.

Central to this work is the use of TIAALS a software tool for mapping and visualising social interaction patterns. By integrating qualitative research with TIAALS’s network-mapping capabilities, Sappho reveals the often-invisible webs of connection between artists, ensembles, and international improvisation networks. The talk situates these visualizations as both analytical and creative tools, offering new ways to understand the dynamics of co-creation, the transmission of improvisational knowledge, and the relational ecologies that sustain experimental practice worldwide.
