    Description

The Spectacular Showcase of Textile Innovation at the University of Huddersfield shone a spotlight on the incredible scientific and creative innovation taking place in the textile industry today. Visitors came to find out how scientists, businesses and artists are continually exploring how to make the industry more innovative and environmentally sustainable. As well as workshops and talks at the Technical Textiles department at the University led by Dr Andrew Hewitt, there were talks from Parik Goswami, Professor in Technical Textiles on how scientific developments in textiles are being applied in areas far beyond clothing. On Saturday the Spectacular Showcase hosted the culmination of the Future Fashion Challenge with a fashion show created by around 150 young people from schools from across the district. Also on offer on both days were free workshops on up-cycling and new technological innovations in textiles and their potential societal and business impacts, led by FFF member Dr Andrew Hewitt. As a result of the event, the vast majority of respondents who responded to the official survey reported the event gave them a greater understanding of how relevant the textile industry was, of the potential for employment in the textile industry, and of career progression in the textile industry. (Woven 2019 Evaluation Report). Specific on-site feedback showed the event gave new understanding of textile innovation and attendees were "amazed" at the scope and possibilities of the programme of textile research being conducted in the UK.
