Title Ethical Complexities of Operating in War Prone Regions. Media name/outlet Medium Country/Territory United Kingdom Date 25/04/25 Description With the wars and rumours of wars that have plagued the world economically, socially and politically, there are general concerns for businesses operating in war-torn regions. Businesses with subsidiaries in conflict-prone countries are left with dilemmas and questions about responding to such geopolitical shifts. One knows the impact of war can be devastating, as people lose their jobs, essential products and services offered by businesses and even their lives. Take the ongoing Russian war as a case in point; some multinational enterprises (MNEs) are disassociating themselves from Russia’s political leadership (Meyer & Estrin, 2023); several have already left Russia. Other companies, including Nestle, PepsiCo Alibaba and Unilever, that stayed with justifications for their choice (Yale, 2025) are criticised for possibly being indirect supporters since their taxes can be used by the Russian government to sponsor the war (News Insight, 2024). While one can see the economic merits and demerits of staying or leaving, the ethical issues are much more complex.
