Huddersfield researchers examine social media's impact on narcissistic traits

Press/Media: Research

Description

Researchers at the University of Huddersfield have developed a new theoretical framework exploring whether social media recommendation systems may contribute to the amplification of narcissistic traits over time.

Dr Calli Tzani and Professor Maria Ioannou, Co-directors of the University's Cyberpsychology Research Network, have proposed a model called Algorithmic Trait Amplification (ATA). The framework examines how algorithm-driven content recommendations could interact with existing personality traits, particularly narcissistic tendencies, through repeated patterns of online engagement.

Subject

Dr Calli Tzani

Reader in Psychology

"Recommendation systems are designed to respond to user behaviour. Our framework explores the possibility that, over time, repeated exposure to self-validating content could influence the expression of existing personality traits. We believe this is an important question for psychology and one that warrants empirical investigation."

Professor Maria Ioannou

Professor in Investigative and Forensic Psychology

"Psychological development often involves experiences that challenge how people view themselves. Algorithmic Trait Amplification (ATA) proposes that if digital environments consistently prioritise content aligned with existing preferences and beliefs, this may have implications for personality processes and therapeutic interventions. These are questions that deserve systematic study."
