Humans Were in Australia 20,000 Years Earlier Than We Thought, And the Proof Is in Our DNA

Press/Media: Research

Description

A sweeping new genetic study has uncovered compelling evidence that the first humans to reach Australia arrived far earlier than many scientists believed, and they did so by navigating open ocean along not one, but two entirely separate routes through Southeast Asia.

New genetic research supports the theory that modern humans reached the ancient continent of Sahul around 60,000 years ago, several thousand years earlier than some competing models have proposed. The findings also suggest that these early migrants likely traveled along at least two separate routes through Southeast Asia.
