The Social Construction of Kidnapping: A Critical Perspective. By C. Tamayo Gómez

Press/Media: Research

Description

There are social phenomena that seem to resist critical analysis because of the intensity of the violence that runs through them and the heavy moral charge that surrounds them. Kidnapping is one such phenomenon. In public debate, it is usually framed either through moral horror and sensationalism, which present it as an exceptional event, or through the language of data and technical management, which abstracts it from the historical, political, and cultural contexts in which it is embedded. In The Social Construction of Kidnapping, Camilo Tamayo Gómez moves beyond these limiting registers. Through a rigorous and multidisciplinary approach, the book analyses kidnapping as a historically situated and politically charged social fact, without trivialising its violence or reducing it to a simplistic moral judgement.
