DescriptionThe Threads in Common project (2026–2030), led by the University of Huddersfield with international academic, museum, and cultural partners, investigates the Coloured Embroidery Scheme, a First World War humanitarian initiative led by Quaker reformer Sara Margaret Fry. Supporting refugee women in France, the scheme combined modernist design with aid, using materials from the Omega Workshops. The project repositions women’s central roles while exploring connections between art, internationalism, and humanitarianism. Through interdisciplinary workshops and research, it examines how creative practices addressed trauma and shaped new social and political visions, offering insights into the historical and contemporary intersections of design, gender, and refugee support.
