University of Huddersfield takes AI to another level with a robot called Harry the Humanoid

Artificial intelligence is one of the most high profile and controversial subjects around … and now the University of Huddersfield has set up an institute specialising in it.

The Institute for Applied Artificial Intelligence (IAAI) is the first fully cross-disciplinary research centre or institute at the university, encompassing researchers in computing, engineering, health, business, sciences, education and the arts, as well as professional staff.

Prof Murray said: “This is an exciting opportunity to bring together the diverse AI research, training and teaching that is being carried out at the university.

“What’s unique about the institute is how we are not only focusing on research and innovation, but also on how AI is delivered within the curriculum and embedded into processes and services across the university.”

Prof Monty Adkins, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation, who helped establish the new institute, added: “As AI increasingly shapes every part of our lives, responsible and thoughtful implementation is crucial.

“By exploring its potential across the arts, science and health, the University of Huddersfield is advancing research in ways that are both innovative and ethical as well as delivering meaningful impact.”
