Centre for Audio and Psychoacoustic Engineering

Organisation profile

Welcome to the Centre for Audio and  Psychoacoustic Engineering. We are a research centre within the School of Computing and Engineering at the University of Huddersfield. Founded and led by Dr Hyunkook Lee, the APL specialises in the study of auditory perception and its practical applications in audio engineering and music technology. We conduct fundamental psychoacoustic research to provide theoretical solutions for audio engineering problems, and also develop intelligent and perceptually motivated algorithms and user-interfaces for next-generation audio and music technology applications.

There are currently eight staff researchers and eight postgraduate students working on various research topics

Our past and current research areas include the perception, recording and reproduction of audio for immersive 3D and virtual reality formats, perceptual optimization of virtual acoustics, quality prediction models for reproduced sound and soundscape, auditory-visual interaction in sound localisation, designing new user interface for mixing, new recording and mixing techniques for popular music, and subjective quality evaluation of various types of audio equipment

The Resources section includes links for open-access software and databases we have developed to benefit the audio research community (e.g. HULTI-GEN, HAART, MARRS, MAIR, 360BRIR, SOFA for Max). The section also provides some of our presentation materials.

The APL is equipped with world-class research Facilities, including including an ITU-R BS.1116-compliant listening room for 3D audio reproduction, and enjoys access to state-of-the-art recording/mixing studios, concert halls and industry-standard recording equipment within the music technology courses of the University.

We welcome research collaboration for exciting projects and also provide consulting services for the industry. We have strong links with academic partners such as New York
University, University of York, University of Surrey, Chalmers University of Technology, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, University College London (UCL), as well as with industry partners such as Fraunhofer IIS, Schoeps, Bang and Olufsen, Auro Technology and IAN Network. Previous industry consulting projects were for  Samsung Electronics, Volvo Cars, L-ISA and Arup. For enquiry on collaboration or consultancy, please contact Dr Hyunkook Lee

UN Sustainable Development Goals
