Pharmacology and Therapeutics Centre

Organisation profile

Research within this centre focuses on the development and evaluation of therapeutics designed to target cancer and neurological disorders. Both phenotypic evaluation of novel chemicals and the development of targeted therapeutics designed to target specific biochemical pathways that are altered in disease are areas of specific interest in this centre. The centres activities include:

  • Tumour hypoxia and the tumour microenvironment
  • Tumour metabolismand associated molecular vulnerabilities of cancer cells.
  • Tumour Cell Migration and Invasion.
  • Cellular signalling mechanisms of cell death versus proliferation/survival in normal homeostasis and in pathological conditions
  • Phenotypic evaluation of novel molecules and target deconvolution
  • Development of three-dimensional cell culture models
  • Drugs from Nature Targeting Inflammation
  • Cannabinoids in the management of disease
  • Non-coding RNA networks in disease
  • Biomarker discovery
  • Identifying biomarkers and treatments for psychiatric disorders

UN Sustainable Development Goals

In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. Our work contributes towards the following SDG(s):

  • SDG 3 - Good Health and Well-being
  • SDG 7 - Affordable and Clean Energy
  • SDG 9 - Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
  • SDG 10 - Reduced Inequalities
  • SDG 14 - Life Below Water
