Biography

Andrea joined Huddersfield University in April 2021 as a lecturer in policing having lectured in criminology at Loughborough and Coventry Universities and as a module assistant at the Centre for Criminal Justice Studies, University of Leeds.

Academic attainment - MA in Policy Studies 2003 from Leeds Beckett University, PhD in 2017 from the University of Leeds, School of Law. In 2014 Andrea joined the editorial board of the international Sage Journal - Critical Social Policy, ranked 5th internationally.

Research interests include gender and security, victimisation and resistance studies, policing and social control and crime and social inequality. Academically, Andrea has a deep interest in critical approaches to criminology and in criminological theory. Specifically, feminist, race and social harm theory and power.

The academic milestones outlined above are built on over 20 years’ work in social policy; domestic violence prevention, addressing poverty and social exclusion and neighbourhood renewal. Andrea’s commitment to social justice is evident in over 40 years’ active engagement in grassroots, women’s, youth and ethnic minority organisations in disadvantaged neighbourhoods. These experiences developed a deep understanding of ‘top down’ social policy implementation and of ‘bottom up’ policy experiences. Both perspectives are invaluable to a critical approach in teaching.
