Dr Bob Gilworth.
Bob has been in leadership roles in Higher Education Careers and Employability for around 25 years. Most recently, he was the Director of the Careers Group, University of London. Prior to that, he was Director of the Careers Centre at the University of Leeds for around 13 years and before that, Head of the Careers Service at the University of Huddersfield. Since September 2020, he has been back at Huddersfield in an academic role, teaching on the MA in Career Development and Employability and engaging in research and consultancy in the field. His research and innovation interests are around Higher Education Careers and Employability strategy and policy at regional, national and international levels, the further development and application of Career Readiness insights and labour market intelligence.
Bob is a past President and Research and Knowledge Director of AGCAS (the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory services) and a Fellow of NICEC (National Institute for Career Education and Counselling).
At the University of Leeds in 2012, Bob and his team instigated the “Careers Registration” (CR) approach to gathering and using career readiness data from all current students. With his University of London team, he led the national CR Learning Gain research project 2015-2018. The CR approach has now been adopted by >90 HEIs in the UK and by institutions in Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Portugal. Bob leads an international CR project called “CR+” and works with Graduate Careers Australia on the Australian CR Learning Gain project. He has strong connections with NAGCAS (National Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services) and Australian Universities, including speaking at NAGCAS conferences and delivering national workshops with NAGCAS and CGA. He also works with Yorkshire Universities on regional collaborative approaches to careers and employability data.
In 2022 Bob was awarded the AGCAS President’s Medal for outstanding and sustained contribution. He is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a member of the Careers Service Committee at the University of Cambridge and an External Examiner for the University of York.
Bob’s doctorate is from the International Centre for Higher Education Management (ICHEM) University of Bath, with a thesis on “Organisational Responses to the Employability Agenda in English Universities.”
