Christine is Director of the School of Art Design and Architecture. She studied English and European Literature at the University of Warwick and has a PhD from the University of Leeds. Her career includes work in further, adult and community education as well as HE. She has taught literature and cultural studies and has been involved in the education of teachers in HE and FE. In 2010 she was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship by the Higher Educaiton Academy. From 2006 until 2015 she was Dean of Education and Professional Development at the University of Huddersfield, then Pro Vice-Chancellor for Teaching and Learning before retiring in 2019. She returned in 2020.
Her research interests are interdisciplinary, combining literary studies, cultural studies and education. She has written about the impact of literature on students’ world views, about children’s and young adult fiction, film and television, and about the representation of education in popular culture. Her most recent publications include an edited collection with Prof. Patricia Gouthro, for Palgrave Macmillan, exploring the role of fiction in the education of professionals, and an article for Studies in Continuing Education on the work of Naomi Alderman as a feminist educator.
