Biography

I am an interdisciplinary researcher with a background in social policy, sociology and human geography. I joined the University of Huddersfield in 2020 having previously pursued a PhD within the Sustainable Housing & Urban Studies Unit (SHUSU) at the University of Salford. I have worked on research projects commissioned by a range of funders including UK government departments, local authorities, housing organisations, charities and universities. I am an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) and a member of the Social Policy Association and British Sociological Association.

Much of my research is focussed on uncovering and understanding contemporary challenges in society and the potential responses of policy and practice. I have research experience in fields as diverse as migration, housing, homelessness and regional food systems. Funded by the University of Salford, my PhD research sought to explore and understand the complexity of migration and integration at the neighbourhood level and local understandings and experiences of ‘community’. I have presented my independent research at academic conferences in the UK and Europe, and I have also disseminated the findings of smaller commissioned research projects to policymakers and stakeholders at local authorities and charities. In my current role at Huddersfield, I am working on a major research project funded by NHS England and NHS Improvement. Set within the wider agenda to recruit and retain international migrant nurses at scale over the next four years, our research is focussed on understanding the arrival and integration experiences of new international migrant nurses who have moved to the UK and onboarded with NHS organisations.
