Biography

Dr Shirsendu Sikdar is a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering within the School of Computing and Engineering, University of Huddersfield. His research interest broadly centres on the Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) & Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE), Cyber-physical Systems, NetZero, Nonlinear Ultrasonics, Acoustic Emission, Advanced Composites, Smart Materials, Systems & Structures.

Prior to joining University of Huddersfield, Dr Sikdar has been involved in several European/UK projects as EPSRC Research Associate at Cardiff University (UK), Marie Curie Fellow at Ghent University (BE), Research Associate at IMP PAN (PL) during 2016-2023 that focussed on development and implementation of Smart SHM & NDE, Smart Sensing Systems for safety-critical engineering structures under variable loading & operating conditions. During his PhD, Shirsendu developed an Ultrasonic Guided Wave Propagation based robust SHM strategy for online monitoring of Sandwich Composite Structures subjected to disbonds & localized core-inhomogeneities using ultrasonic guided wave propagation/dispersion. This research was sponsored by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). Dr Sikdar secured £370k+ research grants as Principal Investigator & Fellow and holds 50+ peer-reviewed publications spanning international journals, conference proceedings, Book & book chapters. His expertise is further underscored by his role as a diligent reviewer for more than 20 esteemed journals from The Royal Society/Nature/Elsevier/Sage/IoP/IEEE, ... He is a Lead Guest Editor for 2 international journals – Buildings & Signals.

Research interests
• Structural Health Monitoring/Condition Monitoring: is a significant area of interest especially for Aerospace/Automotive/Wind-energy/Marine applications where intelligent monitoring systems for structures integrated within an IOT framework would help in the development and fail-safe operation of next smart structures.
• Active Control of Vibration & Noise: is essential to ensure robust, real-time cancellation of structural vibration/noise even under changing operational and loading conditions.
• Computational modelling, Cyber-physical Systems/Digital Twin: is receiving increasing attention in high-tech applications because it enables simulation of a products’ operation in a virtual environment in a parametrized space which captures both design features and operational conditions. This requires advanced computational modelling techniques including reduced order modelling to have a sleek, interactive model in real-time.
• NetZero: net zero refers to the balance between the amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) that's produced and the amount that's removed from the atmosphere. It can be achieved through a combination of emission reduction and emission removal. The research is focused on developing sustainable, zero-emission, noise-free & economic smart monitoring systems and renewable energy systems.
