Personal profile

Emilene has been teaching in Product Design courses since she received her doctoral degree in 2015 from the University of Cambridge. Previously, she worked for several years in the automotive industry - at FORD Auto Company in England and Germany - and in the development of automated technology products in Brazil. Emilene's experience ranges from User Centred Product Development, Design, Simulation, Ergonomics, Usability and Inclusive Design. She graduated in Product Design at the University of Sao Paulo State (UNESP) and holds an MSc in Human Factors for Inclusive Design from the University of Loughborough and a doctoral degree from the University of Cambridge UK.

Research Expertise and Interests

Emilene’s research has been informed around the core themes of inclusive design, user-centred design, design process and more recently, user experience design as a driver for innovation. These are inter-related themes developed since her master’s study when she first became interested in the application of inclusive design in practice.

Her research interests are to explore these themes - inclusive design, user-centred and user experience design - in the context of commercial product development, system, service design as well as their applicability in cross-cultural contexts.

Research Degree Supervision

User Experience Research is the main theme of Emilene’s research. Two different topics of research are approached under this theme. The first one explores the fallacies of product interface, system and service design among a wide diversity of potential users and their different capabilities. The aim is to explore paths of misconceptions that unable potential users to use a product, system or service adequately. Research on this topic contributes to new analytical frameworks, design guidelines, and new designs.

The second topic examines the applicability of user experience, user-centred and inclusive design methods and tools in commercial design practices. Exploring different contexts of design practice, the aim is to understand the conflict of interests in design practices that decrease the use of user experience (and inclusive design) methods and tools. Research under this topic contributes to the development of methods and tools in which the scope, interface, and results are compatible to stakeholders’ needs during new product (service/system) development.
