Biography

Erhan is a Senior Lecturer in Accounting and Finance at the School of Business, Education and Law, University of Huddersfield.

Erhan joined the University of Huddersfield in January 2018. Prior to joining Huddersfield Business School, he worked as an Assistant Professor at Istanbul Gelisim University. Erhan obtained his PhD in Finance at Birkbeck College, University of London, where he had the opportunity to work as an Assistant Lecturer after completing his doctoral degree. Erhan also hold an MA in International Business Management (with Distinction) from Kingston University and a BSc (Hons) in Business Administration from Istanbul University.

Research

Erhan’s primary research interest centres on the fields of corporate finance – especially, dividend policy, corporate governance, ownership structure and corporate social responsibility. He has a growing interest in the other fundamental properties and applications of accounting, finance, and management in various areas such as, but not limited to, tourism, banking, REITs, energy, and green stocks.

Erhan’s research appears in different international journals, such as “Tourism Management”, “Journal of Environmental Management”, “Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics”, “Global Finance Journal”, “International Journal of Managerial Finance”, “Finance Research Letters”, “International Journal of Accounting and Information Management”, “Corporate Governance (Bingley)” and “Economic Issues”.

Erhan has presented his research at various national and international conferences. He has been granted an external funding award from the prestigious funding body, the British Academy [Ref: SRG23\231725]. Erhan served as a Guest Editor for the special issue titled “Corporate Governance, Accountability and Disclosure” with the Journal of Risk and Financial Management. He has also been refereeing for different leading journals, such as “Abacus”, “Review of Quantitative Finance and Accounting”, “International Review of Financial Analysis”, “International Journal of Finance and Economics”, “Corporate Governance (Bingley)”, “Finance Research Letters”, “International Journal of Accounting and Information Management”, “Applied Economics”, “Applied Economics Letters” and “Borsa Istanbul Review”.

Teaching

Erhan has taught various modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, such as Corporate Finance, Finance Theories, Investment and Portfolio Management, Quantitative Analysis, Accounting for Managers and Success in Numerical Skills. Erhan has supervised PhD and MSc students as well as been involved progress monitoring and Viva examining for PhD candidates. His teaching also includes providing personal tutoring for both undergraduate and postgraduate students and mentoring placement students.

Administration

Erhan is a First Year Tutor for undergraduate Accounting and Finance students. His main responsibilities include arranging the induction week, supporting student learning and development, liaising with Year 1 module leaders to ensure all modules operate in accordance with the University regulations, participating in conducting student panels and reporting to the Course Committee. He is also an Academic Misconduct Officer representing the AFLE department and dealing with investigating suspected cases of academic misconduct in students’ assessed work.

Erhan has actively taken part in the one-week Flying Start program for undergraduate students and the one-week Duty Week during the summer, dealing with student enquiries and applications. He has volunteered to participate in and contribute to various open days, applicant visit days and taster days.

Erhan has acted as the internal moderator and second marker for various modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, such as Financial Management, Corporate Finance, Contemporary Issues in Accounting and CSR, Investment and Portfolio Management, Foundations of Management Accounting and Statistics for Social Sciences.

Erhan also serves as an External Examiner for the BSc International Banking & Finance (top up) degree at the University of Northampton.

Other qualifications, memberships and awards

Erhan is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He is also a member of the British Accounting and Finance Association (BAFA), British Academy of Management (BAM) and UK Shareholders’ Association (UKSA).

Erhan was awarded the “2018 Highly Commended Emerald Literati Award” for the paper “Corporate dividend decisions and dividend smoothing: New evidence from an empirical study of Turkish firms” published in the International Journal of Managerial Finance. He also received the “2017 Highly Commended Emerald/EFMD Outstanding Doctoral Research Award” for the PhD thesis “Dividend policy: Evidence from Turkey” in the finance category.
