Biography
George Bargiannis (publishing as George Baryannis) is Reader in Artificial Intelligence and Subject Area Leader for Computing and Information Systems at the School of Computing & Engineering. He is also the Deputy Director of the Centre for Autonomous and Intelligent Systems.
George's research has mainly focused on Knowledge Representation and Reasoning, as well as Interpretability, Explainability and Trustworthiness of Artificial Intelligence. His research is applied primarily in Supply Chains, Smart Homes and Service-Oriented Computing.
George has received more than £2.5million of external competitive funding as PI and Co-I and has authored more than 50 papers published in books, journals and conference and workshop proceedings. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of AI in Scientific Disciplines and serves in the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Ambient Intelligence and Smart Environments.
George has taught and led a wide range of modules and courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, in face-to-face and distance learning modes and has also led the development of new modules and courses in Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science. He has supervised students in a wide range of projects for undergraduate, postgraduate taught and postgraduate research programmes.
George received a DiplEng in Electronic and Computer Engineering from the Technical University of Crete, Greece in 2006 and a MSc and PhD in Computer Science from the University of Crete, Greece in 2009 and 2014. From 2007 to 2014, he was Research Assistant at the Institute of Computer Science of the Foundation for Research & Technology – Hellas (FORTH). He joined the University of Huddersfield as Research Assistant in 2015 and served subsequently as Research Fellow, Lecturer and Senior Lecturer.
