Dr Heidi João obtained a BSc in Chemistry and Zoology from Dhempe College of Arts and Science in Goa (India) and a MSc in Organic Chemistry at Goa University. In 2010, she moved from the United Arab Emirates to embark on a PhD programme at the University of Huddersfield under the supervision of Dr Karl Hemming.

After successfully completing her doctorate in synthetic organic chemistry that was primarily focussed on the synthesis of heterocyclic ring systems - pyrrolobenzodiazepines, indolizidines and indole molecules with potential biological activity, she moved to London to work as a research scientist for Spirogen (a member of the AstraZeneca group) on novel cytotoxic antibody drug conjugates (ADC) as cancer therapeutics.

Heidi then pursued her passion for teaching as a lecturer at the University of Greenwich in 2015 and then carried out a short stint of research as a KTP associate (Knowledge Transfer Partnership) at the University of St Andrews before moving back to the University of Huddersfield as a Post Doctoral Researcher with the Hemming group in 2017.

Research Expertise and Interests

Her current research interests lie in the overlapping areas of synthetic organic chemistry and medicinal chemistry
