Projects

  • Development of a high dynamic-range, free-form surface-metrology. To establish feasibility of the key technical risk items in a novel metrology instrument that aims to deliver automated, high dynamic-range, in-line metrology for “industry-sized” free-form surfaces, fast and precisely. Then, to estimate uncertainty of measurement. Aim to address free-form parts of any shape, up to 30~40cm in size.

  • Research on the potential of industrial robots to automate manual interventions with CNC polishing machine, and to provide surface-processing capabilities in their own right.

  • Development of aspheric aluminium mirrors polishing techniques for a space- based telescope system.

  • Development on an automation system combining an industrial robot with a CNC polishing machine. The scope of this project is to deliver a fully-automated, integrated system to enhance industrial mass ultra-precision manufacture.

  • Developed a process-chain for the manufacture of the mirror segments for the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) using the 'Precessions' polishing technique.
