Ian left secondary modern school at the age of 16 and, after completing an indentured apprenticeship as an HGV engineer, worked extensively in the road haulage industry culminating in the role of Fleet Engineer for an international road haulage company. After completing his pre-service training, Ian taught a range of motor vehicle and engineering courses for nine years.  He then moved to teacher education and the Advanced Practitioner role in the same further education college for another five years before joining the University of Huddersfield in 2009. Ian successfully completed his doctorate in July 2014.
