Research Expertise and Interests

Jamie P. Halsall is a Reader in Social Sciences in the School of Human and Health Sciences and is currently the Director of Graduate Education at the University of Huddersfield. He joined the institution in September 2008, having previously worked at Edge Hill University and Liverpool John Moores University as an Associate Tutor and Research Assistant respectively.

In 2003, Jamie achieved a BA (Hons) in Geography from Edge Hill University and a Master’s degree in the Geographies of Globalisation and Development the following year from the same institution. Jamie went on to complete his PhD at the University of Liverpool in 2010.

Since completing his PhD, Jamie has gained two Postgraduate Certificates in Higher Education: the first focused on teaching and learning, and the second on postgraduate supervision. These qualifications broadened his pedagogical understanding and his approach to teaching and learning. Jamie became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) in March 2010 and was awarded a senior fellowship (SHEA) based on his experience in leadership and management in teaching and learning/research, and mentoring staff in the Higher Education sector in January 2017. Jamie became a Chartered Geographer (CGeog) in April 2018 in recognition of his contribution to research and teaching in higher education.

Jamie’s research has been published in high impact social science and pedagogy journals (e.g. Entrepreneurship Education, Housing Studies, International Journal of Sociology and Social Policy, International Journal of Sustainable Society, Labour & Development, Local Economy, Social Responsibility). He has published a number of books with other academics, the most recent of which  is Contestations in Global Civil Society (2022) (with Roopinder Oberoi and Micheal Snowden), Emerald Publishing. Jamie has also published numerous book chapters on ageing, entrepreneurship and innovation, and public policy, as well as reports commissioned by external organisations.

Building on his leadership, management and mentorship experience, Jamie successfully completed the Level 7 Certificate in Strategic Management and Leadership awarded by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) in 2019. The qualification has allowed him to become a Chartered Manager.

Since 2017, Jamie has held several management roles at the University of Huddersfield, which have included: Interim Deputy Director of Graduate Education for Behavioural and Social Sciences (2023-24), Academic Leader in International (2021-23), Academic Leader in Teaching Excellence Framework (2017-21), and Subject Leader in Sociology and Social Policy (2017-18).

Back in February 2024, Jamie was appointed the Director of Graduate Education in the School of Human and Health Sciences. In this role Jamie is responsible for all postgraduate research courses (i.e. MSc by Research and PhD), strategic leadership and direction for the postgraduate graduate research activities of the School. Other duties include ensuring that the Graduate School strategy is embedded within the School Research Strategy and is fully implemented, and that progress is monitored in line with operational planning reporting.
