Biography

First degree: BSc(Hons) Applied Chemistry, University of Salford (1989). PhD: Synthetic Organic Chemistry (Synthesis of Four Membered Ring Nitrogen Heterocycles) supervised by Dr R K Smalley, University of Salford (1993). Postdoctoral work (1993 - 1995): Universities of East Anglia and York with Professor R J K Taylor on the synthesis of polyene natural products, such as vitamin A, using pyrylium heterocycles.

I lectured in organic chemistry at the Universities of Bath (1995 - 1996) and Hertfordshire (1996 - 2001), before being appointed to the staff at the University of Huddersfield in August 2001, where I currently lecture and research in organic chemistry in the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering in the School of Applied Sciences.

Teaching Areas: foundations of organic chemistry, functional group chemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry for pharmacy students, organic chemistry for forensic sciences, carbonyl chemistry, organic synthesis, techniques of practical organic chemistry.
