Biography

Katie is a Senior Lecturer in children's nursing and is the lead for child nursing at the University of Huddersfield.

She is a qualified children’s nurse by background. Katie specialised her nursing career within paediatric intensive care, working across specialist units.

Katie took on a clinical educator role, covering 3 paediatric intensive care areas prior to moving into higher education.

Katie undertook a Masters Degree in Health Professional Education and achieved teacher status.

Katie began work at the University of York in 2008 as a lecturer within the maternal and child health team. She took on the role of programme leader for children’s nursing in 2011 and has developed SSPRD provision within paediatrics for the Department. She was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2013.

Katie commenced her Professional Doctorate in January 2017.  This is focusing on the use of simulation in pre-registration Nursing Curricula and in particular the impact of uniforms on students engagement with simulation

As the Undergraduate Admissions Tutor was responsible for the recruitment for all full-time undergraduate nursing and midwifery programmes. She also recruited to both the Associate Practitioner and two-year Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing.

Katie took on a new role at the University of Huddersfield in 2018, as a senior lecturer and lead for the Child Nursing Programme.

Katie is also a member of the Children and Young People Nurse Academics Network (CYPNAUK).

Katie has a particular interest in the use of simulation in helping students develop their clinical and communication skills and has a keen interest in education regarding safeguarding children. Through this, she has worked with practice colleagues to develop an innovative form of teaching safeguarding skills to undergraduate student nurses, utilising simulation techniques. The research identified very positive results for students from the learning perspective and she has presented this at several national conferences around simulation.
