Personal profile

Biography

Laurence Colbert is a sound artist, performer, and researcher whose interdisciplinary practice explores the relationship between sound, space, and architecture through field recording, experimental performance, and visual art. He holds a PhD from Oxford Brookes University, where his research developed a rhythmanalytical approach to urban field recording, drawing on the work of Henri Lefebvre, Jaques Attali, and Italo Calvino.

At The University of Huddersfield Laurence (aka 'Loz') is module leader for Inside The Music Business and also teaches Performance Skills, (solo and ensemble, including improvisation), Applied Performance as well as delivering seminars for Sonic Arts and Electronica.

A founding member of the band RIDE, Colbert also brings decades of experience from the music industry into his academic work. His creative practice includes crowdsourced sound projects, vinyl releases, immersive performances, and audio-visual installations exhibited at festivals and venues such as Audiograft, OVADA, and Independent Venue Week. His innovative use of improvised styli and DJ techniques to ‘perform the city’ has contributed to new understandings of sound, rhythm, and street art.
