Biography
Dr Leanne Monchuk is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology and Policing and co-Director of External Engagement within the School of Human and Health Sciences. Dr Monchuk's research interests include: environmental criminology, crime prevention, policing, policy analysis and evaluation and qualitative and participatory research methods.
In 2016, she was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) for her thesis entitled ‘Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED): Investigating its application and delivery in England and Wales’. Leanne has published extensively on the subject of CPTED and worked on a number of projects within this field both nationally and internationally. She has co-edited two special edition journals: ‘International Perspectives on Planning for Crime Prevention’ (Built Environment Journal) and ‘Designing out Crime: Voices from the Fields’ (Safer Communities journal).
In 2016 and 2017, Leanne was awarded funding from the ESRC to take part in their Festival of Social Science. The two events aimed to educate, engage and empower young people about the importance of crime prevention. As a result this, Leanne has since been working in collaboration with West Yorkshire Police and Central and West Yorkshire Scouts to co-design and co-produce a dedicated crime prevention occasional badge to all Cubs Scouts (aged between 8 and 10 years old) across West Yorkshire. Further information about this can be found here: www.westyorkshire.police.uk/scouts
Leanne is a member of the University’s Concordat for Research Careers and Engagement Oversight Group (2015 - present), the University's Secure Societies Institute (SSI) and is on the editorial board of the University's Student Research Journal 'Fields': https://www.fieldsjournal.org.uk/editorialteam/
