Liam is a British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) accredited Sport and Exercise Scientist, an Academic Associate on the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr), a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), and a UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) Clean Sport Advisor.

After completing a PhD at Northumbria University on the extra-time period of soccer, Liam joined the University of Huddersfield as a Lecturer in Sport, Exercise and Nutrition Sciences in September 2016, and became Senior Lecturer in October 2017. He is the Course Leader for MSc Sport and Exercise Nutrition and MSc Sport Physiology and Performance.

Liam is Deputy Lead-Coordinator for Unit of Assessment 24 (Sport and Exercise Sciences) for the Research Excellence Framework (REF) and is on the Editorial Board for Biology of Sport, an international quarterly journal dedicated to the Sport and Exercise Sciences. 

Since July 2020, Liam has been a Scientific Advisor to the British American Football Association (BAFA), and a member of the BAFA Sport Science and Medicine Committee. Liam's role is to support the development of contact and flag formats of American Football in the UK, across all age groups. 

Liam is passionate about developing new and early-career researchers and some of his research areas are listed below.   • Research and the application of science in team sports, particularly soccer and American Football
  • The investigation of ergogenic aids to improve exercise performance
  • The effectiveness of recovery modalities following exercise
  • Sports nutrition
  • Recreational team sport activities to improve health and wellbeing (e.g., walking football and netball)
