Personal profile

Liza Lim is Professor of Composition joining the University of Huddersfield in 2008. As Former Director of CeReNeM, the Centre for Research in New Music (2008-2017), she initiated and established the HCR CD/DVD label, CeReNeM Journal (see Issue 5, 2015), Divergence Press and CeReNeM's international research network and exchange platform, Speculations in Sound. She has also led two large URF research projects for the centre, the first focussed on contemporary performance practice, the second on international networks and new technology in music.

Lim connects her compositional practice to areas such as Australian Indigenous aesthetics (‘shimmer’) and non-western epistemologies of time and space; the way external representations (eg: knots) amplify and extend cognition; ecologies of collaboration and distributed creativities.

She has published extensively with the international music label Casa Ricordi/Universal Music Publishing Group who hold a catalogue of over 70 of her scores. Her fourth opera 'Tree of Codes' premiered in 2016 was commissioned by Cologne Opera, Ensemble MusikFabrik and Hellerau-European centre for the Arts and was described as 'a major contribution to the music theatre of our time' (Neue Zeitschrift für Musik). The opera will have a new season at the Spoleto Festival in May/June 2018. She was recently awarded the Don Banks Prize in music (Australia) recognising her 'outstanding and sustained achievement' and contribution to the field of music. She is the recipient of the Paul Lowin prize for Orchestral Composition, Senior Fellowships from the Ian Potter Foundation and Australia Council, and was DAAD Artist-in-Berlin in 2007-08 amongst numerous prizes, commissions and industry awards.

Liza Lim gained her PhD from the University of Queensland, MMus from the University of Melbourne and BA (music) from the Victorian College of the Arts. She is in demand as a jury member and as a guest teacher at international summer courses such as Darmstadt, Royaumont and the Beijing International Composition Workshop. During 2017 she was Visiting Professor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and in 2018, Composer-in-Residence at Boston University's Centre for New Music.

She has given guest lectures and masterclasses at the University of Harvard, University of California San Diego, UCBerkeley, Cornell University, New York University, Manhattan School of Music, Getty Research Institute LA, Stanford University, Institute of Musical Research, London, Royal College of Music, RMIT’s Spatial Information Architecture Laboratory, National University of Singapore, Kunstuniversität Graz and at Glasgow, Oxford, Cambridge and BathSpa Universities.
