My interest in Electrical Engineering was first sparked at age 14 when I got my first Short Wave radio. Spurred on to study the subject, I first arrived in Huddersfield in 1977 to study Electrical Engineering at the then Huddersfield Polytechnic. After graduating, I stayed on to do a PhD in Optical Communications in collaboration with British Telecom Research Labs. Then came a two year Research Fellowship (again with British Telecom) working on Pulse Position Modulation (an area I am still working in) before finally taking up a permanent academic post here at Huddersfield. Since joining the staff I have taught on a variety of courses but mainly in the area of electromagnetism and communications. I have written three books and published many papers in the area of optical communications. One of my papers won the Marconi Premium for being the best paper with engineering content in the Journal if the IERE. I am first year tutor as well as helping out with recruitment.

I am now embarking on a new area of work that stemmed from my interest in using optical fibre in the home for control and monitoring purposes. A cross-disciplinary group has been formed that is currently examining ways of using technology to make existing houses more sustainable without major disruptions to the home or its surroundings. Using a variety of measures we hope to reduce a homes reliance on expensive grid electricity and gas heating.
