Biography

Mary Bellamy is senior lecturer in composition and module area leader for undergraduate composition.

Mary studied composition with Simon Bainbridge at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London, and at Sheffield University where she gained her PhD in 2003 under the guidance of George Nicholson.

Mary is active as a concert composer specialising in collaborations with contemporary performers and has also created installations with artists from the field of visual arts.

Her works have been performed at festivals in the UK and abroad including Europaischer Musikmonat,  Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, the Cutting Edge and Out Hear concert series’, and have been broadcast on BBC Radio 3. Her works have been performed by the London Sinfonietta, the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, the Composers Ensemble, the SEM ensemble, Ensemble Expose, Suono Mobile, the Bozzini Quartet and Ensemble Musikfabrik as well as by renowned soloists, Stephen Gutman, Richard Craig, Severine Ballon, Christopher Redgate and Genevieve Lacey. Her collaborative installaion works have been exhibitied in museums and galleries in the UK, Europe and America. Recent projects include a portrait concert at Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival 2011.

Recordings of her works are available on HCR and NMC labels.

Mary joined the staff at the University of Huddersfield in 2006, having previously been a visiting tutor in composition at Huddersfield since 2001 and at the Royal Northern College of Music between 2006 and 2011.
