Biography

I am a Registered Nurse with a background in general Nursing and have Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral degrees in Computer Science from the University of Manchester, UK. I have 30 years' experience of theoretical and applied research in Digital Health with a particular focus on electronic health records and standardised terminologies.

I hold an Adjunct position as Chair at the University of Colorado, Denver , USA, I teach on the Health Informatics programme at the University of Wales, Swansea, UK, and I am External Examiner at the University of Westminster, London, UK.

I have previously held Digital Health leadership roles at the UK Royal College of Nursing and the International Council of Nurses - I currently act as consultant to the International Classification for Nursing Practice Programme.

I have published widely and am asked regularly to speak at conferences and seminars. I was for 10 years Editor-in-Chief of Informatics for Health and Social Care.

I am Vice Chair (Working Groups) of the International Medical Informatics Association Nursing Informatics Working Group, a member of national and international standards bodies and think tanks, and I regularly provide advice to organisations such as the NHS.

I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, the American Academy of Nursing, and the American College of Medical Informatics and was the recipient of the 2017 Virginia K. Saba Informatics Award.
