Personal profile


I am a practical microbiologist with over 25 years experience working at the interface between research and industry. I have two independent research themes: firstly disinfection and infection control and secondly radioactive waste disposal. In the case of disinfection and infection control I manage an industry focussed research and consultancy group the Hygiene and Disinfection Centre which has assisted a wide range of companies to take their products from the lab bench to the marketplace. In the case of radioactive waste disposal I have a longstanding profile as a national and international expert in gas generation and the impact of microbiology on the performance of radioactive waste disposal facilities. Much of my current research is focused on the fate, transport and biosphere impacts of Carbon-14 and I am PI for the C14-BIG project a joint NDA/EPSRC grant on the disposal of reactor graphite and associated Carbon-14.For more information on the C14-BIG project please visit the project Website.

In conjunction with the carbohydrate research group (CRG) I also have a range of research projects on the generation and biodegradation of complexants such as iso-saccharinic acids. The CRG has a unique suite of analytical techniques for the analysis of cellulose, it's degradation and subsequent degradation products which underpins our research in this area.
